ANTHONY STACCHI is the acclaimed writer/director of Laika Studio’s Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA-nominated stop motion animated feature film THE BOXTROLLS which starred the voices of Elle Fanning, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Simon Pegg. Most recently he directed the CG animated feature THE MONKEY KING, starring Jimmy O. Yang and Bowen Yang, and executive produced by legendary Hong Kong film director Stephen Chow. It streamed on Netflix where it became the most viewed film in the world on its first week of release.
He was also co-director/original story writer of Sony’s hit CG feature film OPEN SEASON, which starred the voices of Martin Lawrence and Ashton Kutcher. He was a storyboard artist on ANTZ, SPIRIT, ASTRO BOY, MISSING LINK, and Del Toro’s PINOCCHIO among others. He also wrote the original story development on Sony’s HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA. He’s had animation stints at George Lucas’ ILM and worked on such films as GHOST, HOOK, CURIOUS GEORGE, THE ROCKETEER, and BACK TO THE FUTURE 2/3.
As a commercial director at San Francisco’s cutting edge Colossal Studios he directed award-winning spots for such clients as Budweiser/Anheuser-Busch, Nike and Coca-Cola as well as on television shows like AEON FLUX and MTV’s LIQUID TELEVISION. While at Henry Selick’s Twitching Image studio, he worked in story development and as a storyboard artist/animator on such projects as TOOTS AND THE UPSIDE DOWN HOUSE (working closely with screenwriter Steven Soderbergh), Tim Burton’s CORPSE BRIDE, and Selick’s JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH. Tony was the Supervising Director on the ShadowMachine animated series DALLAS AND ROBO staring John Cena and Kat Denning.
Tony graduated from California Institute of the Arts in 1986 with a BA from the Character Animation department. His student films screened at the 1987 Annecy and Hiroshima Animated Film Festivals and his first jobs in the animation industry were in Taiwan and Korea where he began a life-long love of Asian cinema.
